Planning your Menu

The menu is the most creative part of party planning. In order to ease the last minute work load, plan ahead and choose food items that can be frozen or refrigerated a day or more ahead.

Buffet serving seems most popular during Derby week as it is an easy way to entertain a maximum number of friends with a minimum of space and help. There is the traditional buffet supper where guests serve themselves and dine throughout the home, and the 'seated' buffet supper, at which guests serve themselves and eat at set tables.

Enjoy these examples of some traditional Southern and Kentucky Derby specialties:

Appetizers:
   Salsa & Chips
Dill Mix Dill Mix served in a hollowed-out bread round
Cajun Popcorn Kenny's Gourmet Cajun Popcorn
Pepper Jelly Pop's Pepper Jelly served with cream cheese on crackers

Main Course:
[[[[[ ? ]]]]] BBQ Beef, Pork or Chicken
Country Ham Country Ham
 Beaten Biscuits Beaten Biscuits

Desserts:
  Derby Pie, served warm
  Gourmet Bourbon Candies
  Bauer's Modjeskas
  Chocolate Jockey Caps and Horseshoes
  Mom Blakeman's Pulled Candy

Beverages:
Mint Julep Mix Mint Julep Mix
Coffee Maker's Mark Gourmet Bourbon Coffee
 Ale-8-One Ale-8-One

We also have an extensive selection of Splendor in the Bluegrass. All of our cookbooks have something good in them -- feel free to look around and experiment. Remember: it's a party -- it's supposed to be fun!
